The administration of US President Joe Biden has already sent $4.5bn in military aid since the war began. The HIMARS – which will be limited in range by the US to prevent Ukrainian forces from using them to strike targets inside Russia – are part of a $700m package of weapons to be paid for from a $40bn fund for Ukraine approved by Congress last month. The US said last week that it agreed to Kyiv’s request for high-mobility artillery rocket systems (HIMARS) multiple-rocket launchers, which will allow Ukrainian forces to hit deeper behind Russian lines while staying out of range of Russian artillery. ![]()
